Her career in journalism began with Myrtle Beach South Carolina as an anchor and news reporter for WPDE-TV. Then she became an anchor in the morning and a reporter at WCBD TV. The stories she reported in Charleston regarding the police's tolerance regarding DUI cases, prompted the State Law Enforcement Division to look into the matter. The result was the state government imposing more stringent rules in these instances. Ms. O'Dell was awarded the Best Report of the Media Award in South Carolina by the Associated Press. O'Dell was then employed by the Miami-based station of NBC WTVJ-TV as a investigative reporter and anchor, prior to her joining Access Hollywood in the role of co-anchor for the weekend.
